OVERVIEW

Watching the Script is an environment for reading, exploring, and directing plays. Rather than present the text from a script in sequence, the system displays the text where actors might say the words, and as such it provides a theatrical representation of the text as if one were watching the script. The environment also includes a rich prospect view of the play so that certain traits (like characters or locations) can be suggested in an overall view of the script.

The current iteration of Watching the Script is dynamically driven by several external XML files (Shakespeare's plays encoded by the Nameless Shakespeare project). The first XML file contains the play, including all speeches and stage directions. The second is the blocking file for the given play, which determines to which coordinates in the stage area each character will move on any given speech. The third XML file is a menu file containing all the available play files to be used by Watching the Script.
